Memories of Rhodesia - Newsletter

When we started this news letter a little under a year ago we had no idea what we were letting ourselves in for and the overwhelming response we would get from people all around the world.  The Rhodesian (& yes, that includes the Zimbos as well) community is alive and well.   There are a number of excellent efforts, led by Margaret Kriel and Eddy Cross, that keep us all up to date with events and memories. We highly recommend their reading to you.

This past couple of months have been busy for us.  First, we have moved our mailing service to its own dedicated system.  Then we have been involved in helping redevelop Flame Lily Books so that we have a one stop shopping for new books and a service to help new authors.  Check out the latest offerings below.

The History Trivia has proved to be amusing and popular.  In future it will be included as part of the Rhodiechat Newsletter, but can always be found at our web site as well.

To those in the Northern Hemisphere - just remember that Autumn is not all that far away, whilst you guys in the South can look forward to Spring.  The seasons remind us that life goes on with or without us .....

Thank you

DOWN MEMORY LANE

rio

When we think of Rhodesia, or as many now do - Zimbabwe, we always think of the wild, open spaces, the fantastic sunsets, the abundant game, Vic. Falls and so many other natural things.  But the one thing we tend to forget is that Rhodesia was one of only a handful of fully industrialized countries in Africa.  It was a land of hustle and bustle, manufacturing & industry, mining & development.

Most who called that land home did not come or live in the countryside but in the towns and cities.  This months Down Memory Lane takes a brief look at Life in the Busy Places.

PENSIONER'S UPDATE

Latest News from Zimbabwe

Memories of Rhodesia is committed to supporting those old-age pensioners that are economic prisoners in Zimbabwe. 10% of our revenue goes to this cause. Working with Hope Unlimited, an established Christian organization, 100% of all monies are channeled through them. The funds are then donated to SOAP, which is doing a great job caring for the aged. The reports we get back from Zimbabwe are extremely encouraging, knowing that we (and that includes you) have kept some of our dear old folk alive.

Thanks to your generosity we were able to send a goodly amount to Zimbabwe this month. We appreciate the way that so many of you have responded and continue to support this worthy cause.

THE SAINTS
The Rhodesian Light Infantry.

A glossy coffee-table, pictorial format with hundreds of colour photos, maps, rolls, honours and awards. It is not intended as a definitive history but, with more of a classic ‘scrapbook’ feel, the presentation attempts to capture the essence of this fine unit—what it was like to be a troopie, one of the ‘ouens’. We have accessed a host of unique, previously unpublished photos and illustrative material and many former RLI members have embraced the project, generously contributing photos, memorabilia and anecdotes. Ian Smith has written his tribute in the front and the foreword is by the last CO, Lieutenant-Colonel Charlie Aust.

Destined to become a collectors item.  Now being shipped from the US.

THE MONTH'S SPECIAL OFFER

RHODESIA

Rhodesia: a vibrant country with more than its fair share of troubles but nevertheless a country that is one of the loveliest, most scenically commanding in Africa. It is a land of awesome balancing rocks and granite gomos; of dusty veld burned dry by the winter sun; of mist-shrouded mountains, game-filled plains, wild forests, serene lakes.

In this book, Paddy Hartdegen sets out to explore the Rhodesia that Rhodesians - and countless visitors from all parts of the world, too - know, love and will always remember.

He has chosen his pictures, from a variety of sources, not only for their technical excellence but for the mood they evoke, and in doing so has managed to capture the very essence of a beautiful and unique corner of the continent. Rhodesia will find a welcome place on bookshelves both within and beyond the borders of Southern Africa.
