Memories of Rhodesia - Newsletter

April is a most momentous month of the year for me, because every April 9 I age another year! Once again I woke up to find myself another year older, with even more of my life behind me than is in front of me!

Where we live on the East Coast of the USA it is one of the most beautiful months, as the month slowly unfolds so do the myriad of flowering trees and bushes, followed by flowers, grass that has to be mowed and mosquito's! At least my wife is happy as her vegetable garden is exploding with new growth!

April in Rhodesia was so different. Remember those early Autumn days as the sun shone all day, there was a nip in the air presaging the onset of winter. Everything was still green and lush, yet there was the promise of the cool days ahead. Don't get me wrong, I remember waking up covered in frost whilst sleeping out on patrol and the miserable guti weather than chilled one to the bone, but more than that I remember those glorious days when the sun warmed your body, you could smell wood smoke on the air, the air that was crisp, clean and sharp, and it was good to be alive in Africa.

April in Rhodesia was also a momentous month for other reasons. April 1978 saw the formation of the Executive Council as the rule of the RF came to an end. A year later the first one-man one-vote elections were held and Bishop Muzorewa became Prime Minister and then in 1980 it all came to end and Zimbabwe was born as Prince Charles declared the country to be legally independent. Yes, a momentous month in the history of the country! We have put some of the headlines as they unfolded on the April page for you to enjoy.

Just a reminder about Protea Trading. If you have something to sell or are looking for something memorable then check out this new auction site for "all things African". In addition, we have expanded our storefront at Memories of Rhodesia and are adding stuff all the time.

In these trying times, please remember the Pensioners that need support and consider making a donation to help them out. 100% of all funds donated go to their support.

Until next time

Dave Cushworth

NEWSFLASH: As we literally go to press we learn that Bishop Muzorewa died April 8th (which, ironically, is Ian Smiths birthday!). Details can be found at The Dailiy Telegraph web site

COMMUNITY SERVICES

Community & Customer Services Notes

The Rhodesian Community is unique. Connected through its common experience of a beloved country and loyalties, it still demonstrates that wonderful spirit of camaraderie and support. They are some of the friendliest, warm-hearted people the world has known. The bonds forged in the communities, large and small, throughout Rhodesia, still hold strong today in this new worldwide community.

We have been seeing a trend over recent months where Rhodies find themselves in financial straits and are selling off their memories, often for a mere pittance, just to survive. We have always tried to give a fair price for anything we buy as we are only too aware of the circumstances that drive people to sell their memories. Please, if you know of someone who wants, or needs to sell their Rhodesian items, get them to contact us first. We will gladly tell them what their items are worth and will do what we can to make sure they get a fair and equitable amount. We work with a number of other dealers around the world and will make sure they do not get taken advantage of.

STICK LEADERS

This is Charlie Warren's account of his service in the Rhodesian Light Infantry (RLI). A recipient of the Bronze Cross of Rhodesia (BCR), the author is highly qualified to tell this story. You will swept into a vicarious experience of the daily life of a member of this highly effective, elite unit that was involved in most of the hottest action during the Rhodesian war.

Charlie relates tales from his service with 3 Commando (The Lovers), RLI in their Fire Force role as well as of his (reluctant) qualification as a parachutist at 1 Parachute Battalion (SADF) and his further qualification as a dispatcher.

Comes with special companion DVD of the same name
