Memories of Rhodesia - Newsletter
Strange the quirks of history! With
the passing of Ian Douglas Smith on November 22, another phase of history
came to a close. Back in 2005 I was able to sit down with
Ian and his daughter Jean Tholet one morning for tea in his room at the
nursing home. The photograph I have of us sitting next to each other,
together with a signed inscription to me, proudly hangs on my office
wall. Only
twice before had I been that close to him. That was back in Chiredzi
in 1976 & 1977 when I did close protection detail. The quirk? O
yes! Ian lived in St. James', Muizenburg and a matter of 100 meters
or so along the same road is the cottage where Cecil John Rhodes died!
The man that started Rhodesia and the man
that brought it to a close - the First and the Last Rhodesians if you
will - died within sight of each other!
I am reminded of the words that Kipling
wrote for Rhodes's funeral and how appropriate they also are to Ian Smith:
"Living he was the land and dead, his soul
shall be her soul"
Thanks
Dave Cushworth

PENSIONER'S UPDATE
|
Latest News from Zimbabwe
Memories of Rhodesia is committed to supporting those old-age
pensioners that are economic prisoners in Zimbabwe. 10% of our
revenue goes to this cause. Working with Hope Unlimited, an established
Christian organization, 100% of all monies are channeled through
them. The funds are then donated to SOAP, which is doing a great
job caring for the aged. The reports we get back from Zimbabwe
are extremely encouraging, knowing that we (and that includes you)
have kept some of our dear old folk alive.
Thanks to your generosity we were able to send
a goodly amount to Zimbabwe this month. We appreciate the way that
so many of you have responded and continue to support this worthy
cause.

THE
MEN WHO MADE RHODESIA
Now back in print. The original book is an exceptionally
rare item.
The story of the Occupation
of Mashonaland by Rhode's Pioneer Column is a romantic chapter
of British Colonial history. That this Column was able to complete
its task without bloodshed or other mishap was undoubtedly due
to the fact it comprised a strong force of The British South Africa
Company's Police. The Occupation completed, most of these men made
their permanent homes in the Territory, some as settlers, some
as the nucleus of the later Police Forces which have been combined
and incorporated into the British South Africa Police of today,
a Corps which is highly honored by having Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth
the Queen Mother as its Honorary Commissioner.
