Memories of Rhodesia - Newsletter
One of the things I try to do with each
newsletter is to put together a collection of newspaper headlines for
the month. In this case, somewhat belatedly, we take a look at January
in Rhodesia. I get the intimation that each month seems to follow a theme.
Every January between 1978 and 1980 was dominated by talks leading to
a political settlement. January, the beginning of a New Year and also
one that actually brought some hope for the days ahead. First the Transitional
Government then Majority Rule then the end of the war and legal Independence.
This January they are talking again in Zimbabwe
about the Political future. We hope and pray that something concrete
will actually come of it for the people of Zimbabwe. Those who do not
learn the lessons of history are doomed to repeat it and boy, it sure
seems that way now. It does not take much imagination to be able to take
the headlines of 30+ years ago and rewrite them for today.
We have a couple of exciting announcements.
We are constantly being asked by people
if we will advertise or sell their books or products. We have given careful
thought to the growing demand and have developed Protea
Trading in a
joint venture with other Rhodesian related organizations. This a site
that covers the Southern African sub-continent, where you will find a
wide variety of items for sale. There are no listing fees and it is open
to all who want to market their new books, music CD or other items they
might have. We charge a modest final value fee only - far less than any
other such site out there. Give them a visit, give them a try.
Then, at Memories
of Rhodesia, we have launched
a new store front that is modeled round an auction
format. We have over
1100 items listed already with more being added daily. It links back
to the various section throughout our site. You can view one of our slide
shows, then if you want to buy something, just follow the link to the
new store front. Or, just browse away to your hearts content.
Slowly but surely we keep adding material
to our Rhodesian
Memories Section, so don't forget to pay a visit there
and take a trip down memory lane.
Lastly, please do not forget the ongoing
need for support for the Pensioners Fund. While things might have improved
in Zimbabwe, they still have nothing and are so reliant on the monthly
food and assistance that comes their way. 100% of funds donated are sent
to help them. Thank you
As I look out of my window we have more
snow on the ground and more promised at the end of the week. O for the
warmth of Africa! But then, if the speed that January has gone by is
any indication, I can expect summer any day now.
Until next time

January - the
first month of a New Year and always full of hope for a new day
in Rhodesia.
In 1978, 1979 and 1980 it was politics that dominated
the news - each time about the steps being taken to implement
a political settlement that would eventually bring peace to the

Memories of Rhodesia is committed to supporting
those old-age pensioners that are economic prisoners in Zimbabwe.
10% of our revenue goes to this cause. Working with Hope Unlimited,
an established Christian organization, 100% of all monies are
channeled through them. The funds are then donated to SOAP, which
is doing a great job caring for the aged. The reports we get
back from Zimbabwe are extremely encouraging, knowing that we
(and that includes you) have kept some of our dear old folk alive.

BETWEEN
THE SUNLIGHT & THE THUNDER
Few countries have felt the tumult of the winds of change more
than Kenya, Congo and the country once known as Rhodesia. And long
before Harold Macmillan made those words famous in Cape Town in
February 1960 when he addressed the South African government, Gil
Freeman had already felt the full force of their violence. On a
farm at the foot of the Aberdare Mountains in Kenya, his parents
and his sister were slaughtered by the anti-government disciples
of Mau Mau in February 1953. He was seventeen years old. From a
volunteer in the government security forces responding to the brutality
of the Mau Mau offensive, to professional hunter, to game warden,
Gil remains in Kenya for the next decade, moving on in due course
to the Congo and then Rhodesia.
Following his mixed fortunes, Between the Sunlight and the Thunder
is a major novel of a fast-changing Africa that covers 25 years
of colonial history when those winds wreaked havoc on people and
wildlife alike. In a blend of fact and fiction, of real-life, disguised
and invented characters in three countries, this historical novel,
whilst harrowing, is also insightful and hauntingly beautiful,
written by a person whose knowledge and love of Africa bleeds through
every page. Woven into the story is the eternal triangle, the consequences
of which evolve against the background of one of the most explosive
periods of African history.
