Memories of Rhodesia - Newsletter

Has anyone else noticed, or is it just me, but its seems that the news out of Zimbabwe has a familiar sound to it?

Where before have we heard about "Talks about Talks", or "Power Sharing" or the  atrocities inflicted on the innocent by members of ZANU and then blame the "evil" opposition?  Or what about the role that South Africa has to play in helping to define the future of the country.

Whilst the history books may have been subject to political cleansing and rewritten to make one side seem like heroes, the truths of history still remain what they are.  Likewise, when the lessons of history are not learned then mankind is doomed only to repeat them!  So it seems to me that what is happening in Zimbabwe of late is nothing more than deja-vue all over again!

We can only pray and hope that this time, maybe, someone will learn a lesson from history and get it right for once!

Now if someone can answer this question: Under Ian Smith there were worldwide economic sanctions against the whole country and yet the economy stayed stable and strong.  There are targeted sanctions against Mugabe and his henchmen and they blame these sanctions for destroying the economy!  Are they then admitting that things were actually better off in Rhodesia than in modern Zimbabwe?

I apologize if this seems like pontification, but like Grace said when she went to Harrod's "I just couldn't help it!"

This past month I had the joy of being in South Africa and at one point being back in the bush at Shikwaru Game Lodge in the Waterburg Mountains north of Pretoria.  How can one truly describe what it was like to once again walk through, smell, taste and experience the African bush?   You might leave Africa, but Africa never leaves you!

We might have left Rhodesia I do believe it has not left us and that the land that lies between the Limpopo and Zambesi Rivers will be healed.  It can never be Rhodesia again, but it can and will be a great place again.

Thank you

Dave Cushworth
