Memories of Rhodesia - Newsletter
Where did the year go? Seems like
only yesterday it started and now we are into November! Once
again November 11th is upon us and we stop again to remember those fateful
days and the memory of those who gave their lives for Rhodesia. That
this day is also Remembrance Day also allows us to stop and pay our
respects to all who have fallen through the years in defense of their
countries and freedom.
Many Rhodesians will be participating a
Remembrance Day Ceremonies around the world. In many cases the
old Green & White will be proudly flown. To those
among us who will be participating I would say a special word of thanks
from the rest of the Rhodesian Community.
As the final words in the service say "At
the going down of the sun - we will remember them!"
Thank you
Dave Cushworth

PENSIONER'S UPDATE
|
Latest News from Zimbabwe
Memories of Rhodesia is committed to supporting those old-age
pensioners that are economic prisoners in Zimbabwe. 10% of our
revenue goes to this cause. Working with Hope Unlimited, an established
Christian organization, 100% of all monies are channeled through
them. The funds are then donated to SOAP, which is doing a great
job caring for the aged. The reports we get back from Zimbabwe
are extremely encouraging, knowing that we (and that includes you)
have kept some of our dear old folk alive.
Thanks to your generosity we were able to send
a goodly amount to Zimbabwe this month. We appreciate the way that
so many of you have responded and continue to support this worthy
cause.

James
and the Duck: Tales of the Rhodesian Bush War
A very different tongue-in-cheek personal account about a forgotten
war. Between 1964 and 1980 Rhodesian men from all walks of life
left their families and jobs to fight for their country. They were
farmers, bankers, railwaymen, shopkeepers, miners and even Members
of Parliament, who every six weeks, changed their soft civilian
life for battle dress, rifles and grenades. These are their stories.

RHODIECHAT &
OTHER STUFF

Rhodiechat
www.Rhodiechat.com
Thanks for the web site info. Its great to know
there are still ex Zimbos out there who want to see Zim restored, if
not to its former glory, then at least stabilized, and will pray to that
end. Its extremely stressful to me, personally , to think of beautiful
black people whom we've known and worked with and who have worked for
us, starving or dying of Aids without recourse to the proper care and
treatment. The plight of pensioners is another sad, even wicked scenario.
I grew up in Greendale and my hubby in Mabelreign, and we now live very
comfortably in Westville, Durban. But our hearts are very for the Zimbabwean
people and we have incredible memories of our respective childhoods.
Things were so simple and uncomplicated. We hardly knew whether we we
rich or poor - it just wasn't an issue. Decor wasn't an issue. You popped
in on people without an invitation and stayed to lunch, or the weekend
, whatever went with the flow.TV went on at six and off at seven thirty,
at least for us kids (we were five) and we had to help Sixpence with
the washing up because our mother felt it was good training (and it was!)
We rode everywhere on our bikes and lived at the Greendale Swimming Pool
in summer. We played in the street with our neighbors kids and in the
next -door bundu, which was Bishops Mount, belonging to the Anglican Diocese
and at Beira too, every August. I broke my tooth at Mermaids Pool on
the rockslide and broke my arm falling out of a Msasa tree in my friend's
garden. We walked down First St.on New Year's Eve and greeted everyone
and anyone. We were unique as a nation as regards friendliness and hospitality.
And I miss that, even though I have great South African friends.
Forgive my ramblings - its good to talk to people who understand.
Regards
Wendy Renwick
Thank you for this news letter. Good to know
that folk are still in contact. Internet has been such a boon in this
direction. I was born in Harare and went to umpteen boarding schools
as my folks, Rex and Beryl Southey, were 'small workers' so we moved
often. I paint pictures and have tried long and hard to get some photographs
of Msasas with their new spring leaves on with say a little bush road
going 'somewhere' so's I can paint these scenes. We (my sister, brother
and parents) grew up and lived in the 'bush'....how I am thankful for
that childhood and long for the bush. Go to the Kruger Park from time
to time and lie awake for ages on my first night's camping, listening
to the familiar 'night' sounds.
Take care and keep up the good work.
Sincerely, Frances Richardson (nee Page, formerly Geddes)
