Memories of Rhodesia - Newsletter
The world financial systems might be in
a mess but to the Rhodesian (and Zimbabwean) it is nothing that compares
to facing world wide economic sanctions, or in the case of modern Zimbabwe
a total melt down. In the face of those past and present
obstacles the people of that great country learned to face and overcome
great adversity.
As the rest of the world worries about its
economic future, so many of you have risen magnificently to the occasion
by donating to help the Pensioners Support Fund and also the family of
Courtney Sparrow. So far this month $3,700 has been sent
to four different organizations working with Pensioners. The
guys at Hope Unlimited tell me that the donations continue to come in
and they will be sending out even more money this coming week.
I had the pleasure of meeting with Courtney
and her family a couple of week ago when I was in South Africa. They
were returning to their farm outside Masvingo the following day. I
was able to hand over to them R4,000 towards their medical costs. This
was in addition to the help that so many gave by donating direct to the
Trust Fund set up at Milpark Hospital. They are extremely grateful
to all those who have helped so far. Courtney was doing very
well, but has still a long course of reconstructive surgery to undergo. Anything
you can do to help will be greatly appreciated.
But I want to say a special thank you to
everyone. I have the great privilege of talking to you
through this newsletter each month and in return get so many wonderful
responses by email or through Skype and I consider myself especially
blessed and greatly humbled by the continuing friendliness, openness,
warmth and generosity of all.
From the bottom of my heart - THANK YOU
!

PENSIONER'S UPDATE
|
Latest News from Zimbabwe
Memories of Rhodesia is committed to supporting those old-age
pensioners that are economic prisoners in Zimbabwe. 10% of our
revenue goes to this cause. Working with Hope Unlimited, an established
Christian organization, 100% of all monies are channeled through
them. The funds are then donated to SOAP, which is doing a great
job caring for the aged. The reports we get back from Zimbabwe
are extremely encouraging, knowing that we (and that includes you)
have kept some of our dear old folk alive.
We work very closely with Hope Unlimited in helping
raise funds for Pensioners. Earlier this month they sent
out an appeal to
our mailing list. Thanks
to your generosity they were able to send $3,700 so far this month
to various organizations!

BETWEEN
THE SUNLIGHT & THE THUNDER
Few countries have felt the tumult of the winds of change more
than Kenya, Congo and the country once known as Rhodesia. And long
before Harold Macmillan made those words famous in Cape Town in
February 1960 when he addressed the South African government, Gil
Freeman had already felt the full force of their violence. On a
farm at the foot of the Aberdare Mountains in Kenya, his parents
and his sister were slaughtered by the anti-government disciples
of Mau Mau in February 1953. He was seventeen years old. From a
volunteer in the government security forces responding to the brutality
of the Mau Mau offensive, to professional hunter, to game warden,
Gil remains in Kenya for the next decade, moving on in due course
to the Congo and then Rhodesia.
Following his mixed fortunes, Between the Sunlight and the Thunder
is a major novel of a fast-changing Africa that covers 25 years
of colonial history when those winds wreaked havoc on people and
wildlife alike. In a blend of fact and fiction, of real-life, disguised
and invented characters in three countries, this historical novel,
whilst harrowing, is also insightful and hauntingly beautiful,
written by a person whose knowledge and love of Africa bleeds through
every page. Woven into the story is the eternal triangle, the consequences
of which evolve against the background of one of the most explosive
periods of African history.

THE
RHODESIAN WAR
Originally published as Chimurenga, this updated version
covers the three main stages of the Rhodesian Bush War, from 1965
until 1979.
Fresh information on the intelligence dirty tricks, scandals and
political back-stabbing will generate further debate about this
erstwhile British colony transformed into a rogue pariah state,
which once again threatens the stability of the region.
