Memories of Rhodesia - Newsletter
I would personally like to thank the many
people that have taken time to write to me about our newsletter and the
pleasure they get from our efforts. It does my heart good to hear
from you and encourages us all to keep going and to try that little harder
to help keep the memories alive and well.
Of course there is always
the odd spite-mail that comes through. One guy wrote to me saying "My
mother said that the Rhodesians treated the Africans like animals". When
I challenged him on that he went silent. But it got me thinking. There
was work, there was food, there was a strong economy, there was transport
back then - things that are sadly missing today. Today there is
political repression, violence, an oppressive Government, a lack of food,
work, money and a collapsed economy. It seems that the ills that
ZANU sought to put on the population back in the 70's have come around
to settle on their own heads today.
I apologize, I don't want to get caught
up in politics. The people, the places and the land are still great
and all look forward to the day when it will turn around. I
would encourage one and all to remember the good times and memories and,
at the same time, continue to pray for those still left.
Thank you for your support of the Pensioners
in these very trying times. Thanks to your generosity
many are surviving today.
Thank you
Dave Cushworth

PENSIONER'S UPDATE
|
Latest News from Zimbabwe
Memories of Rhodesia is committed to supporting those old-age
pensioners that are economic prisoners in Zimbabwe. 10% of our
revenue goes to this cause. Working with Hope Unlimited, an established
Christian organization, 100% of all monies are channeled through
them. The funds are then donated to SOAP, which is doing a great
job caring for the aged. The reports we get back from Zimbabwe
are extremely encouraging, knowing that we (and that includes you)
have kept some of our dear old folk alive.
Thanks to your generosity we were able to send
a goodly amount to Zimbabwe this month. We appreciate the way that
so many of you have responded and continue to support this worthy
cause.

THE MONTH'S SPECIAL OFFER
|
 |
A topical novel about
a turbulent time. It sweeps from the back alleys of Johannesburg
to the sweltering hell of the terrorist war in Rhodesia's Zambezi
Valley.
Breathtaking in its pace, it is a vivid novel of
action with shrewd characterization, rare moments of tenderness
and an incisive social commentary on the effects of the climate
of violence. It is neither a work of fiction nor fact. Some of
the incidents described can be found on official files, others
never happened.
From counter-insurgency operations with the RLI to counter-intelligence
operations with the Special Branch, all are to be found here.

Many thanks indeed for the DVD's 'Land of Legend'.
I particularly enjoyed the section on the Batonka, having spent some
time in that district during the late '50's doing the Op Noah thing.
Two of us were up lake, camping in the bush in Batonka
country. The Batonka had dwelt in the Gwembe Trough since heaven knows
when and as many as 51,000 of them were soon to be displaced by the rising
water of the new lake, thence to be moved to new lands below the dam
wall and some of the younger elements were not best pleased about this
despite careful and extended negotiations. They just could not comprehend
that the water would not go down again in due course as indeed it had
done since time immemorial.
While they were generally a peaceable tribe,
reactions were uncertain. The younger element were particularly acerbic
and there were several confrontations. This fact was borne in mind when
in their area. (Confrontation did in fact evolve later and with some
loss of life)
Richard ( a visiting friend) and I were sleeping on two
stretchers in line under individual mosquito nets suspended from convenient
trees. I got up in the middle of the night for a pee, and in doing so
stepped over the corner of Richard’s bed end. I could just discern his
shape under the net as I did so. Dealing with my nature call, I paused
for a moment to look out over the broadening lake where it was possible
to see some ten feet or so in the dim half-light of the starry night
sky.
I turned to go back to my bed when a dark figure suddenly loomed, coming
what appeared in the instant to be quite purposefully coming toward me.
This
was no time for a halt, who goes there scenario. I simply thumped the
figure hard. Life in the bush tends to prompt that sort of instant reaction!
And bear in mind what I have just said about the Batonka people’s unrest.
Down it went like a ninepin; there was a groan. I hastily grabbed a torch
to illuminate the scene and to facilitate asking the, ‘afterwards’ questions.
To my consternation the beam revealed a dazed Richard, by now sitting
up and rubbing his jaw!! He had heard me get up and prompted by this
decided to follow suit; that was when we met!
Shades of the old song,
‘ When I met this other fella with some chalk in his hand, a coming around
the other side! Again many thanks and keep up the Quiz page! Bob Truman.
