Memories of Rhodesia - Newsletter
Twice a year the world stands upright !
Every
March and every September the world goes through a transition from summer
to winter and back again, depending which hemisphere you are in, and
for just a moment the Equator is horizontal and the the world stands
upright, before it commences it's continuing journey and shift.
Whilst Julius Caesar warned us "beware
The Ides of March", to me September was
the one to watch out for! Things always seemed to happen in that
month. Winter was over, summer was just around the corner, the
Jacarandas were in full bloom, Show season was underway and there was
a sense of expectancy in the air! It was the "silly season" when
the unexpected happened.
Sure
enough, September 1978 brought the ultimate unexpected. The
death of a President, the downing of the Air Rhodesia Viscount Hunyani and the huge raids against Chimoio - all which preceded the raids into
Zambia in retaliation for the Hunyani massacre.
Whilst the Victims Roll has long been removed
from Harare Cathedral and history has been rewritten to eliminate the
disaster, we take time this month to remember what truly happened so
long ago, when the Jacarandas were blossoming and one more "silly
season"
too a turn for the worse. Just for a brief moment we too stand
upright with the world in its journey and remember!
But, life goes on. The world
still continues it journey, and another September
is well upon us. As I sit here writing this newsletter, the sun
is shining, there is not a cloud in the sky and the coolness of Autumn
can be felt. But I can still stop, close my eyes and picture the
purple tress and carpet of The Avenues and smell the sweet Jacaranda
perfume and recall how 40 years ago this September I landed in Salisbury,
joined the BSAP and became a Rhodesian !
Until next month
