THE MISSING PERSONS BUREAU

I am looking for information as to the whereabouts of one James Alan Smith. Mr. Smith, born in London UK, accompanied his parents to Rhodesia as a young man in 1949. Mr. Smith would be in his 76th year now. He was known to attend the 1986 World’s Fair in Vancouver, Canada.

His family resided in an area now known as Chadcombe, (a suburb of Salisbury?), for about 5 years. His father was a member of a British Trade Commission, probably involved in the tobacco industry. His parents returned to England in 1965. He married and stayed in Rhodesia for some time.

It is believed that Mr. Smith attended undergraduate Engineering classes at the University of Zimbabwe. However my several queries to the Administration Office of the University of Zimbabwe have gone unanswered. He may have been enrolled in another College or University in or around Salisbury. Were there any other Colleges in Rhodesia in the early 1950s ? He may have belonged to a Fraternity or given his education credentials on a license or job application. Excepting his parents, now deceased, Mr. Smith had no relatives in Africa.

He does, however, have a grandchild in California who desperately needs a bone marrow transplant. Mr. Smith is the closest living kin and the Doctors say the best chance for lifesaving “match”.

If anyone has any information, however small, about Mr. Smith, the Schools or businesses with which he was connected, that information would be most helpful. Of course, time is very much of the essence!

Thank you

Hello! Just wondering whether anyone remembers Willoughby's Halt, and the small mining operation in the area of the Vungu river headwaters. A Mr Hollings, as far as I can remember, had a license to prospect for diamonds, and made many holes in the streambeds. It was said that he found some industrial diamonds but no gem quality stones. As a child I picked up a lot of pretty stones in the 'wash' from the operation.
We, the Fabian family, lived on Willoughby's Egg Farm for a period of some 10 years.
Does anybody have any info on this?

Best regards to all Rhodies - many of us now in Aussie.

A two-bob motor car

In the early sixties my Dad bought me a car for two shillings and
threepence. OK Ill have to explain how this came about. In 1960 my eldest
brother owned a second hand car dealership in Jameson Avenue. This was the
year that I started working and up until that time I had been riding a
motor scooter.

As my family lived a fair way out of Salisbury a car for me to drive to work
was what was wanted. Now another car dealership had advertised and had got
some good response to an advert for a car for two shillings and sixpence. It
was usually an old car which was taking up valuable space on the car lot.

So my brother thought that he would top that and would advertise a car for
two shillings and three pence, hoping of course, to get similar publicity.
But he mentioned this to my father who immediately said that he should sell
the car to me. He reluctantly agreed but also realised that he could not
claim any publicity as the car was going to his youngest brother.

The car. Well it was a black 1948 Ford Prefect. It served me well. I even
remember breaking the front transverse leaf spring miles away from home and
managing to wire a piece of a tree branch across the spring and made my way
at least 40 miles back to my home. I seem to remember that I kept the car
for a couple of years and finally sold it for 20 pounds.

Johannesburg

I wish you an African morning,
I wish you an Eden land.
Ivory grasses spread at your feet,
thorn trees and copper sand.
Where the first cool moments of dawning
are scorched by the bright sun's birth,
and molten horizons miraged by the heat
quiver above the earth.

I wish you an African sunset,
I wish you a sky on fire.
A thousand red blood-glow horizons
of the day's passed funeral pyre.
Where the shredded clouds form a dark net
to catch the last bright blaze
of the mighty fleeing bronze-cast sun
As it sets in a scarlet haze.

I wish you an African midnight.
I wish you a heavenly sea.
To drown in a dark star ocean
And float on the tide back to me.
Where the foam of the waves is the starlight
that swirls through the endless skies.
To billow and crash without motion
And beach in a spray of fireflies.
