His birth name was van Rooyen. Steven was at Blakiston, Tree Tops and Selborne Primary Schools then to Prince Edward until 1953 when he went to SANC General Botha. Would so love to hear from anyone who remembers me as Brambie Brownbill when I first began I was called Bramblebush by Sr Vye on Ward 1.  I knew Carol Parks (Pip ) Heather Cowper (Roly) Jonesey, Matron Hughes of course and Theatre Matron Sharkey, Wendy van Herdon, or van Rhoyden, unfortunately first names are recalled but not surnames but am sure any girls nursing between 66-71 will know someone I knew.

Ward 1 was always my most favorite ward, but enjoyed my night stint on the gynae ward.. Mr.Moss was the doc who terrified many nurses ...there was a nurse pat moss-no relation. Mr. Levy, the brain surgeon who sharked had a fixation about.... Standish-White enlighten me someone out there. Also had a great time working over at Princess Margaret and of course the Annexe. Can honestly say these were some of the happiest years of my life and would really rally love to relive them with someone.....the hospital may have been old but it was wonderful and in my minds eye I return there and walk those corridors, use those lifts with their heavy metal gates see the wards, Adlam House and just feel I am back there.   View this Posting

I believe her name was Lyn Clark and that her maiden name was Marilyn Green. She had a South African passport but was from Zimbabwe. She’s in her early 40’s, now divorced and lived in England up to May 2007. I believe she has 2 grownup son’s and an ex-husband who all live in England. She was on her way to visit her parents who had a farm near Harare are retired now and may now live in or near Harare. She was also on her way to a religious conference in Zimbabwe in June 2007. Not much to go on!?  If you have any ideas on how to contact her then please would you let me know?  John Rock

Bengaljuice is looking for Debbie Du Toit. If it is the same person who lived in Selous near Hartley, then I can help her make contact as she is my cousin and still lives in the area (Chigutu).  Gavin Rawstrom

PERTH ZIM FEST 2008

At a time when Zimbabwe is very much in all of our hearts and minds, Perth ZimFest 2008 is going to give us a chance to forget, for once, all of the race, politics and scandal - and for us to just be typical Zimbos again and prize for the best dressed, and everything else you would expect to find in the same place as hundreds of zimbabwean party animals - we going to teach these Aussies how to have a beer or 20! We want to appeal to people of races and ages, because one thing connects every single one of us, we are all from the most awesomest country, and we miss it!! Feel free to bring the family, as kids are welcome all day unitll 6pm (becuase of liquor licensing rules). So pull in!!!!

All proceeds help support Pensioners through S.O.A.P. in Zimbabwe.

A WW2DUKWand a few others

My dad at one time in the early sixties ran a tea garden at Lake McIlwaine. It was called the Hunyani Poort Tea Garden and was just along a dirt road from the Hunyani Hills Hotel. It was very much a weekend business with visitors sitting out under the mopani trees and getting stuck into strawberry milkshakes and glorious cream scones.

During the week my Dad used to supplement the family income by driving around the lake to a Mr.South(Southey) farm. Not sure of his surname. Here he would load up sacks of lemons which he would take to Salisbury and sell to hotels. The farmer lost part of the farm when Lake Mcilwaine was built. He was a man in his eighties in those days and it was rumoured that he was the first farmer to plant maize in Rhodesia. I don't know how true this was, but I do know that he had an eclectic collection of old vehicles. The first one I came across was supposedly the earliest tractor to arrive in Rhodesia. It had metal wheels and I think a thumping great one-cylinder engine.

At that I was working as a cadet journalist/photographer for a weekly farming magazine. As a result of the publication of the story and photo of the tractor, it finally was given to the students at the local Tech who restored it and hopefully it is still in a museum in Harare.

The other vehicles on the farm were a WW2 amphibious DUKW. This was bought by someone and removed from the farm and I don't know where this ended up. I do know that a 1928 American car maybe a Hudson was purchased by a close friend of my eldest brother and was hopefully restored. The last car I remember seeing was the farmers honeymoon car, maybe a very early Renault. I know that someone from the local classic car club used to take it on outings during the year. I also don't know of the final home of this car. Maybe there are some readers out there who can fill me in on the missing bits of info.

Tribute to the Rhodesian Soldier
Ross Dix Peek

Call me biased but I think the greatest fighting-man to ever walk the face of the earth was the Rhodesian Soldier. Intelligent, rugged, doggedly-determined and virtually invincible, the Rhodesian fighting-man was a warrior second-to-none, a "Zeus" among  mere mortals.

Heir to a fine fighting lineage, the Rhodesian Warrior was forged in the crucible of War. He had shown his raw-courage and great prowess during the Matabele and Shona Rebellions' of 1893 and 1896; in the "mud, guts and blood"  of World War One (1914-1918); during the great cataclysm that was the  Second Great War (1939-1945), and in the rain-soaked jungles of  Malaya (1950s), where death lurked in every shadow.

But the Rhodesian fighting-man's "finest hour" was the vicious war  fought in his own country, from 1972 to 1980; a war in which many Rhodesians', both black and white, would sadly succumb. Always outnumbered, short of essential equipment, and the  world's "scapegoat", the Rhodesian warrior's ingenuity, enterprise  and daring was truly wonderful to behold; both on the ground and in  the air.

Bronzed and ready, with the ubiquitous "FN"-Rifle ever-present, and  invariably clad in a camouflage cap, "T-shirt", "Shorts"  and "Tekkies", the Rhodesian was the quintessential "bush-fighter". Surrounded on all sides by opportunistic enemies, the Rhodesians'  (ever-alert and always aware of their country's vulnerability) would often venture forth into Mozambique or Zambia, intent on pre-emptive  action; their small mobile-columns' creating havoc and mayhem,  leaving behind a battered and bloodied enemy.

In addition, whenever the need should arise, they could always  beseech the great African-sky, wherefrom their winged-brothers, the  indefatigable Rhodesian Air-Force (RhAF), would unleash yet more  carnage upon a bewildered enemy.

Ah, the units… The "Rhodesian SAS", the "Selous Scouts", "The Rhodesian Light Infantry", The "Rhodesian African Rifles", The "Rhodesia Regiment", "Grey's Scouts" and the "Rhodesian Air  Force", truly a pantheon of greats. And let us not forget the father of Rhodesian arms, the British South  Africa Police (BSAP), and those redoubtable Rhodesian women, pretty-as-hell, and tough-as-teak!

Then there were the leaders. Men such as Rhodesia's prime-minister,  Ian Smith, Africa's "Nostradamus"; General Peter Walls, the Rhodesian  Commander-in-Chief and a veritable "Hercules" in Uniform; Major- General John Hickman, that fine old soldier, and Lieutenant-Colonel Ron Reid-Daly, the founder of the fearsome "Selous Scouts", a  fighting-man if ever there was one.

But of course, the most exalted of all Rhodesian Warriors are those  men and women, many mere boys and girls, who sacrificed their  precious lives for Rhodesia and the Rhodesians -"Lest we forget". And now, although just a memory, the Rhodesian "Troopie", the very  personification of courage, grit and determination, that  fighting "denizen" of the African Bush, still lives on forever in the hearts of those of us who still proudly call ourselves "Rhodesians".

No, you can keep your American "Marines" or the British "SAS", give me the Rhodesian Soldier any-day!
A toast… to the Rhodesian Fighting-man; the very best of the best!
